Position Summary: Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson (JMT) is seeking an entry-level Landscape Architecture Designer with 0 to 5 years of experience for our Hunt Valley, MD office. The successful candidate will be part of an interdisciplinary team comprised of landscape architects, scientists, planners, and engineers focused on existing client support and pursuit of new clients and markets. The preferred candidate must have excellent writing skills and demonstrated capabilities with landscape architecture design and technical report writing. U.S. Residency Required.

This is an excellent opportunity for a self-motivated individual with superior written and verbal communication and “hands-on” skills to excel in a team environment.

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing support on landscape architecture planning and design, environmental assessments, and plant inspections on a wide variety of project types including parks and recreation, campus planning, natural and cultural resource evaluation, ecological restoration, transportation, and green infrastructure.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Provide design and technical support and assistance to project team, Senior Landscape Architects and/or Project Managers on planning, design, and construction projects
  • Assist with preparation of Site Assessments, Feasibility Studies, Master Planning, Concept Design, Streetscape Design, Construction Documents, and Technical Reports
  • Assist with plant inspections throughout a project's lifespan
  • Conduct research, perform desktop reviews, and provide data analysis
  • Create content including text, sketches/illustrations, infographics, maps, 3-D models, and other graphic presentation materials for proposals, reports, memoranda, presentations, conceptual drawings, and design plans
  • Prepare illustrative renderings
  • Participate in and prepare materials for public outreach activities
  • Prepare construction documents, including details, cost estimates, and specifications
  • Attend public meetings

Nonessential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Required Skills

  • General understanding of site design and construction plan preparation
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD and MicroStation, ArcMap, and/or other GIS programs

Required Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Landscape Architecture from an accredited program
  • 0-5 years' experience

Preferred Experience

  • Experience with Site Civil 3D; forest stand delineation and forest conservation regulations; data collection and analysis; report writing and editing; regulatory permitting; horticulture/natural resources evaluations and/or arborist experience.

Working Conditions

Work is performed within a general office environment 75% of the time but does require site visits. Work is generally sedentary in nature but may require occasional standing and walking. Lighting and temperature are adequate and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. within the office environment. Work sometimes requires availability in the evenings and on weekends to participate in public engagement activities or meet project deadlines.

Field work is required approximately 25% of the time and is conducted outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Some lifting (up to 25 lbs) may be required as needed. Field work will require but may not be limited to certain physical demands while performing duties in the field, including the ability to walk, stand, kneel, or bend for extended periods of time and be able to carry field equipment and supplies long distances. Fieldwork may be conducted during any time of the year and may occur in a variety of weather and climate conditions, as needed. The candidate is not required to perform field work in hazardous weather or obvious unsafe conditions.
