Assistant/Associate Professor of Mass Communication

The Department of Mass Communication at Southern University and A&M College in Baton Rouge, LA invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor position specializing in Broadcast Journalism and/or Public Relations, beginning August 2025. We seek a dynamic teacher-scholar with professional experience and academic expertise in a variety of areas including television, radio, and/or public relations. The successful candidate will teach a 4/4 course load, contribute to curriculum development, maintain an active research or creative agenda, and engage in service to the department and university. This position offers the opportunity to work closely with our on-campus TV studio and upcoming radio and podcasting studios.

  • Teach four courses per semester in broadcast journalism and/or public relations, including but not limited to: Broadcast News Writing and Reporting, Multimedia Production, Mass Communication Law, Television and Radio Production, Introduction to Public Relations, Public Relations Writing and Campaigns and Strategic Communications
  • Contribute to the development of new courses that reflect current industry practices and technological advancements.
  • Supervise student projects and hands-on media experiences through the campus TV station, radio station (launching soon), and podcast studio.
  • Advise and mentor students on academic progression, internships, and careers in media and communications.
  • Maintain a consistent and productive research or creative agenda in areas such as broadcast journalism, multimedia storytelling, public relations, or strategic communication.
  • Publish in peer-reviewed journals or contribute creative work to professional outlets (video documentaries, podcasts, media campaigns).
  • Pursue external funding opportunities when appropriate and present at academic and industry conferences.
  • Participate in service activities at the department, college, and university levels.
  • Support student-led media and/or PR organizations (department news teams).
  • Collaborate with industry partners and alumni to build networks and experiential learning opportunities for students.

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Mass Communication, Journalism, Media Studies, Public Relations, or a closely related field
  • Evidence of effective teaching and a commitment to student-centered learning
  • Demonstrated potential for scholarly research or creative work
  • Professional experience in television, radio, or public relations
  • Proficiency with tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, final Cut Pro, ENPS, or podcast production platforms
  • Experience in teaching digital or multimedia storytelling
  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusive teaching practices
