The Corrections Captain (Assistant Yard Supervisor) serves as a key leadership partner to the Corrections Major, playing a critical role in the safety, security, and daily operations of the Elayn Hunt Correctional CenterLouisiana's second-largest, all-male adult correctional facility housing minimum, medium, and maximum-security inmates. This position provides second-line supervisory oversight to a Corrections Lieutenant and all Master Sergeants/Corrections, Corrections Sergeants, and Cadets assigned to Teams A, B, C, or D, ensuring consistent enforcement of institutional policies, effective staff coordination, and the secure management of inmate movement and activities.

Minimum Qualifications

Three years of experience in a correctional, behavioral, or penal institution with responsibility for the security, custody, rehabilitation, or classification of offenders, or in law enforcement or security plus one of the following: 1. Possession of a high school diploma or GED; OR 2. One year of experience in any field; OR 3. Six months of law enforcement experience as a POST certified peace officer. One year of this experience must have been in a position equivalent in scope of responsibility or complexity of work performed to a Corrections Lieutenant in the State service. NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: An applicant who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence or a felony, or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted. In accordance with the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) (Part 115:17) of Title 28 of the Code of Federal Regulations an applicant who has been found to have engaged in any form of sexual abuse; engaged in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force, or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable or refused will be disqualified. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age. Possession of a current driver's license.

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:

  • Coordinate Daily Operations: Meet with the shift supervisor to review daily operational needs. Ensure the Roll Call Training Topic is prepared, delivered accurately, and reinforced during all roll calls.
  • Supervise and Support Staff: Provide direct supervision to the Corrections Lieutenant. In collaboration with the Unit Manager and Colonel, conduct staff meetings to address security operations, problem areas, new directives, policy updates, staff morale, inmate morale, and any issues impacting overall facility performance.
  • Communicate Critical Information: Report all relevant operational, security, and personnel information to the Major, Colonel, and Unit Manager in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Maintain Post Accountability: Remain on the assigned post until properly relieved of duty, ensuring continuity of supervision and security.

Position-Specific Details:

Appointment Type: PROBATION, or PROMOTION OF A PERMANENT, CLASSIFIED LOUISIANA STATE EMPLOYEE

  • Current permanent status classified LA State employees may be required to accept a probational appointment if accepted.
  • An employee selected for a promotion may be required to serve a trial detail prior to being permanently promoted.
  • This posting may also be used to fill a vacancy as a temporary job appointment. If filled as a temporary job appointment, should a permanent position become available, the employee may be converted to a probational appointment.

Compensation: This position has a Special Entrance Rate of $24.64 per hour. There is also 'Premium Pay' for this position: A rate between $1.00 an hour and $2.00 an hour for each hour worked based on years of service with DOC, in addition to regular pay.
