Health And Safety Manager

Air Products is seeking an experienced Health and Safety Manager to provide leadership across our North American HyCO operations. In this highly visible role, you will be accountable for driving a culture of safety excellence, ensuring compliance with regulatory and corporate standards, and leading continuous improvement across a complex portfolio of industrial gas facilities. Typical travel is approximately 25%, with periods of increased travel up to 50% based on site needs and business priorities. This role supports multi-site operations and may be based out of Houston, TX, La Porte, TX, Gonzales, LA, or Prairieville, LA.

As the HyCO Health and Safety Manager, you will serve as a trusted advisor to senior leadership while leading and developing a team of health and safety professionals. You will guide the implementation of Air Products' Health and Safety Management System, proactively identify risk, and ensure consistent application of best practices across approximately 25 US and Canadian sites supporting critical hydrogen and industrial gas operations. This role plays a key role in shaping safety strategy and influencing operational decisions at the senior leadership level.

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Champion Air Products' goal of zero injuries by driving a strong health and safety culture and partnering with operations and business leaders to integrate safety excellence into operational performance, reliability, and long-term business objectives.
  • Provide expert health and safety leadership, including training, site assessments, incident investigation, and implementation of safe systems of work.
  • Lead and coordinate field support across multiple sites to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and corporate policies.
  • Ensure health and safety training programs are fully implemented and effective across operations and support functions.
  • Develop and implement risk assessments for high-risk activities and non-standard operations in collaboration with regional and global teams.
  • Analyze safety performance data, identify trends, and lead improvement initiatives to reduce incidents and risk.
  • Support planned and unplanned regulatory inspections and internal or external audits.
  • Serve as Air Products' representative with local and regional regulatory agencies.
  • Lead incident investigation processes and ensure timely corrective actions.
  • Provide safety leadership for facility outages, repairs, capital projects, and acquisitions, including due diligence and integration activities.
  • Coach and support site leaders and senior management on health and safety matters.
  • Own crisis management processes at the senior management level within the region.
  • Develop talent and build a pipeline of high-potential safety professionals for the broader organization.

Required Skills / Abilities:

  • Strong leadership and influencing skills with the ability to engage effectively at all organizational levels.
  • Deep knowledge of health and safety regulations, compliance strategies, and governance.
  • Demonstrated expertise in Process Safety Management (PSM) principles and practices.
  • Ability to lead in a matrix organization and influence across functional boundaries.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to manage competing priorities in a dynamic, high-risk operating environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to build collaborative teams lead others even if a formal reporting relationship does not exist. Strong interest in developing and leading a high performing team.

Minimum Hiring Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related technical discipline (Chemical, Mechanical, or Electrical required); advanced degree preferred.
  • CSP or equivalent safety certification, or comparable professional experience.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in industrial, petrochemical, or gas processing environments.
  • At least 7 years of progressive safety leadership and field management experience in complex facilities.
  • Experience across multiple operating areas such as hydrogen, syngas, air separation, ammonia, or related industrial gas technologies preferred.
  • Prior operational or plant leadership experience strongly preferred.

Working Conditions
